"Marine still life"
Concrète music that evokes an exploration of the rusted wreck of a large ship lying at the bottom of the sea. The vessel still swings with the tides and currents; the large metal plates are gradually tearing apart, whilst a few objects on board slide, roll and fall. Marine flora and fauna now inhabit the wreck. As they explore the remains of the superstructure and the ship’s interior, maybe visitors will imagine what life was like on board and the voyages the ship undertook.
1. Cautious exploration
2. The bridge and the machinery
3. The new marine guests
The sound material is created using Ondolon to process sounds captured by microphone: scraped sheet metal (with thanks to François Cuau’s sound sculptures), bouncing objects, pipes, etc. The soundscape is minimalist yet evocative: rustling and crackling, the screeching of tearing steel walls, and the clattering caused by the rolling and falling of small objects. The human presence of the visitor is also suggested by a few saxophone accents.
